LPA: A Year in Review

As we end the year, a retrospective always seems like a good idea.
This year, we had almost 30 different committees on the LPA, and the activities have been amazing.

Below is a list of many of the events and activities that were put on or sponsored by the Parents' Association. We hope you really read through it, because it is a testament to the richness of our community, and it speaks to the importance of our thriving Parents' Association.

  1. We continued to endorse the importance of reading and research.
  2. We staffed the library.
  3. We held two book fairs to support the library
  4. We updated the non-fiction collection substantially.
  5. We held literary lunches for students with a new curriculum.
We planned Curriculum Enrichment activities for each grade
ranging from a visit from educators on:
  1. Adventures in Africa for the 1st Grade
  2. Paul Revere House for the 3rd grade
  3. Living Voices for the 4th grade
  4. A touch tank for Kindergarten
  5. Birds of Prey and a visiting weatherman for the 5th Grade.
  6. Field trips to Horn Pond, Apple picking, the Science Museum, the Discovery Museum,
and a variety of other places.
  7. We planned the fall all-school enrichment activity hosting
Charlotte Blake Allston, an African American story teller.
  8. We supported the celebration of the Chinese New Year.
  9. We held Authorfest, with amazing authors and illustrators for each grade.
We continued to build a sense of community through:
  1. The Fall Family Barbecue
  2. The Halloween Party
  3. The May Fair
  4. Our first 5th Grade/Staff Basketball Game
  5. Field Day and barbecue.
  6. We launched a successful UNICEF campaign
  7. The second year of the Health Expo
  8. The Spring Yard Sale to support programs.
We showed our appreciation to our staff and enhanced the building:
  1. Two Teacher/Staff Breakfasts
  2. Teacher/Staff Luncheon.
  3. Set up the Room parents as support for all of the teachers.
  4. Installed uniform window treatments for the offices in the front of the school.
  5. Painted benches in the courtyards, and planted in front of the school.
  6. Gave staff baby gifts, and retirement gifts.
  7. Library got a face lift, thanks to the efforts of some dedicated parents
We supported our staff and students by:
  1. Offering a keyboarding class to our students
  2. Funding the pilot program for the STEM/ LEGO Robotics
  3. Purchasing a stand for the Smart Board that the 5th Grade gave to the school.
  4. Held a mentor night for fifth grade students.
  5. Helped complete the new, improved Tot Lot.
  6. Published a Literary Magazine "A Kid's View" to showcase our students' writing and artistic talents. Our 4th edition!
  7. Set up and staffed Picture Day.
We continued to improve our efforts toward strong communication:
  1. Replace printed version to an electronic email version of the newsletter
  2. Continued to enrich our website, including showcasing student work
  3. A bulletin board outside the front doors provides parent information
  4. Hosted a Popsicle party at the end of the summer for the incoming kindergarten class.

We were able to do all of this because of the generous donations of time, talent, and financial resources of the parents in the school, through their support of our Go-Direct program, collecting Boxtops for education, holding a Yard Sale, pizza nights, and more.

We are lucky to have the support of a very supportive Principal, and thank Dr. Goodwin for his unfailing enthusiasm for the LPA activities.
