Lynch's Art Room News

Lynch Inclusive School Celebration

by Mr. Goodwin

On Friday, February 13th, for the second year in a row, the Lynch School will conduct a school-wide activity in which we recognize and honor our inclusive nature.

Anna Sea, Lynch Art teacher, recently completed the Lynch Cultural Heritage Map and we will make this the centerpiece of the Lynch Inclusive School Celebration. (I am sure many know this, but it is located outside the dining room across from the main office.) Each K-5 classroom will be signing up for a 15 minute time slot and then venture down to the Lynch Cultural Heritage Map area on that day. Both Anna and I will speak briefly about the map's construction and meaning. Students will then work together to find themselves on the map as well as several of their peers. During this activity, students will be asked to share information pertaining to their culture as a way of building upon one of the Lynch Core Values of being "kind, friendly and respectful to all". The working title of the Lynch Cultural Heritage Map is "E Pluribus Unum - Out of Many, One". Again, 380 K-5 students with myriad backgrounds come to Lynch each day. For a little over six hours, we strive to work together (staff, students, and parents) to be the best elementary school we can be each and every day.

Visiting Artist in the Art Room

by Anna Sea

We had a visiting artist in the Art Room this month. Sue Clark, a parent of 2nd grade student, came and taught a great lesson on Metal Art to our 4th graders. They learned how to make the wings for their insects, butterflies, or birds with a piece of copper sheet. They also used pipe cleaners, wires, buttons, pompoms, etc. to add features.

The 4th grade students had so much fun from doing this creative project. Mrs. Clark is going to bring 8 ft. wood sticks to the art room and hang all of the students' pieces to make a huge mobile. The finished project will be displayed at the Sanborne House on March 28th, 2009 during the "party for the arts" event.

It has been a pleasure having Mrs. Clark in the Art Room. Thank you so much, Mrs. Clark!

The Art Room

The students will learn about the basic elements and principles of design (line, shape, size, texture, color, value, balance, repetition, contrast, harmony, dominance, and unity), art history, and the use of art materials and techniques. By gaining this knowledge, the students will be able to express their idea, thoughts, and emotions through art. They will also learn to appreciate the environment, the culture, and the people around them through the language of Art.
We emphasize personal decision making and problem solving in the art room and we have great confidence in Lynch students. They continue to impress us with their creativity, self-control, caring for others, and willing to learn. Every student will benefit from a challenging background in art education.

Things you should know about the Lynch Art Program:
  • All students at Lynch will have Art once a week.
If your child is in kindergarten, he/she will have Art for 30 min. a week.
If your child is in 1st -5th grade, he/she will have Art for 45 min. a week.
  • We ask that each student keep a smock at school for their art time.
Large, hand-me-down t-shirts or button down shirts work well.
  • The Art room is collecting any kind of recycling materials:
if you have vegetable trays, old magazines, and newspapers at home, feel free to drop them off in the art room.
  • If you have the love for Art and you want to support the art program at Lynch, there are two ways to do so: The Friends of Art is a town wide organization that supports the Winchester Art Department. They are looking for parents like you who have ideas, energy, and time in their role as an arts advocacy organization. To volunteer please contact: winchesterFOA@comcast.net. And, Lynch will have its own group of parents that will support the art program at Lynch. If you are interested, please let us know!

Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns.

SAMPLE UNITS

All School Project

Cultural Thread Map – All K-5 students made a self-portrait. They learned to draw their own face shape, eye color and hair color to represent which heritage he/she has. We seek to visually display which part of the world each student is from by connecting a thread between each self-portrait with the country that he/she is from on the map.

Kindergarten

Line Printing : Students use simple printmaking techniques to explore how lines make up letters and shapes and ultimately complex buildings, landscapes, and worlds. They will learn the concept of space; the background and the foreground in the picture.

First Grade

Van Gogh Unit : We look at many works by the artist with an eye to his subject matter, and expressive use of color and texture. Students will learn about Van Gogh’s life and look at his Sunflower(1888) painting to draw their own emotional sunflower picture.

Second Grade

World City Collage : Students work in groups to create an oversized collage piece. They learn about famous places around the world and use this knowledge to inspire their art work.

Third Grade

Relief Pattern Prints - Students experiment with relief printmaking techniques. They then create their own printing plate with eye to symmetry, unity, and use of organic and geometric shapes. They then do a multi-print edition with varying colors and compositions. They learn different kinds of leaves; Dogwood, Silver Maple, Sugar Maple, Shingle oak, etc.

Fourth Grade

Dream picture - Students learn about Marc Chagall and Rene Magritte in 4th grade. As they study the surrealistic art, they make their own version of a dream picture. They learn the technique to use high quality colored-chalk to create different dream qualities on a black paper. The dream quality includes; up-side-down houses/people, exaggerated size objects, rainbow trees, etc.

Fifth Grade

Equestrian Art - Students learn to creative their own clay sculpture of horses. By creating thumbnail sketches, they learn to draw horse in different horse poses. They select one pose to build their horse sculpture by using the clay technique (scoring/slipping, glazing).
